This is the story of Venus and Charm.  A story that illustrates why I am a memorial pet portraitist, and why watercolor is my chosen medium.   "I am blessed to remind you in a moment for art, the unconditional love you shared with your beloved best friend." John Benfield, BFA

One day Venus came to live with Charm, who was living a very charmed life.  They became inseparable as sometimes a brother and a sister do.  Then, Charm was acting odd and became sullen and withdrew.  Charm's human took Charm to his Doctor who after a myriad of tests determined that Charm had a brain tumour.  And it was located right behind Charm's left eye, which became larger, drawing Charm's left eye up towards the tumour.

What was the family to do now but celebrate each and every day that Charm was helping everyone live a charmed life!  Now more than ever Venus and Charm were like long-lost buddies, doing everything together.  And one special day, Venus began kissing Charm's forehead right on that darn tumour.  This went on for several weeks.

The family was ecstatic when out of nowhere the eye that was drawn up dropped back to normal.  There were talks of a spiritual healing by Venus through all that tender loving kissing, and Charm's Facebook fans were all praying too for a good outcome.  Then one day not too long afterwards, Charm became restless and moody.  And all too soon thereafter, Charm left us for the rainbow bridge that all of our loving four-footed friends cross eventually.

Charm, though I never met him personally, charmed my life as I learned his story and painted him for his human.  Charm certainly epitomizes the unconditional love our companion animals give us relentlessly day in and day out.

When you realize that you will benefit from a work of art to heal through your grief rather than through a photograph, allow me to recreate the loving companion animal you also shared such a bonding unconditional love with through my chosen medium of watercolor.  I am always honoured to be chosen to help in this way.
